Upper Crossed Syndrome

Upper Crossed Syndrome (UCS) is characterized by forward shoulders and a forward head. UCS generally involves tightness--overactivity--within the chest region (pectoralis major/minor), back (latissumus dorsi), and neck extensors (sternocleidomastoid, levator scapulae, scalenes), coupled with lengthening and weakening--underactivity--of the mid-and-upper back muscles (mid/lower trapezius, serratus anterior, rotator cuff) and deep neck flexors.

Individuals who sit for extended periods working on a computer are at risk for developing upper body dysfunction and poor posture if certain precautions are not taken. These precautions include taking frequent breaks and working at an ergonomically sound work station.

Not only does UCS make you look less confident, it is also responsible for chronic pain in multiple areas of the body.

Neck problems

A forward head posture draws the cervical (neck) spine forward. This will straighten the spine (bad!); cause tightness in the neck muscles; cause tension headaches; and cause pinched or bulging discs in the neck.

Low back problems

For every inch forward the head is of the mid line of the body, there is an additional 10-12 psi on the lumbar (low back) spine.

Upper back problems

Rounded shoulders will cause the muscles of the upper back to lengthen and weaken. Once weakened, these muscles are easily injured. Also, the body builds up knots (adhesions) in the neck and upper back.

People often feel this in their shoulders and neck, and blame stress. It's not stress--it's your unhealthy posture. 

Shoulder problems

The bone in the upper arm (humerus) will be pulled forward in the shoulder socket. The tendon in the front of the shoulder will then develop a smaller groove to run through and gets impinged, inflamed, and cause pain when lifting your shoulder above your head. 

Shoulder impingement is the most prevalent diagnosis, accounting for 40-65% of reported shoulder pain.

Rotator Cuff problems

On the back side of the shoulder socket, as the upper-arm bone (humerus) gets pulled forward, the rotator cuff muscles get lengthened and weakened. The likelihood of pain and injury goes up significantly.

The vast majority of rotator cuff tears occur due to the slow degradation of the rotator cuff muscles caused by UCS or poor posture.

Again, individuals who sit for extended periods working on a computer or driving are the most at risk for developing upper body dysfunction due to poor posture.
